Organization: Association of South Ossetian Women for Democracy and Protection of Human Rights
Location: South Ossetia
Year: 2015

Collection and disposal of waste (communal and other types of waste such as dead animals) in Znaur district of South Ossetia is non-functional. Waste is disposed of in a valley and into the river and cattle feeds on illegal waste dump sites.

The campaign set itself the goal of ensuring that the local government start organizing regular waste collection in the Znaur district of South Ossetia and make sure that it is disposed of in a safe manner without threatening the local population. The campaign is spearheaded by the Association of South Ossetia Women for Democracy and Protection of Human Rights that built its own communal waste disposal site thanks to the subsidy of the British Saferworld.

It complies with the necessary technical and environmental parameters and it should replace the illegal communal waste dump sites that pollute the environment and watercourses in the Znaur district and people living along the rivers passing through illegal waste dumps in both South Ossetia and Georgia.
