Abkhazia has long faced the problem of poor waste management. In addition to illegal dumping, another indicator of the problem is the frequent forest fires being caused by the uncontrolled burning of waste in the area. A group of women activists from the South Abkhazian town of Gal/i, therefore, decided to draw attention to this growing problem. The initiative organized educational events for young people in the Gal/i, Ochamchire, and Tkvarchel/i districts on the issue of waste and its impact on the environment. Trained volunteers then helped to identify where illegal waste dumps in their neighborhoods tend to occur. The organization used the collected data to create a set of recommendations for dealing with problematic situations related to waste, which were then addressed to the responsible institutions.
