Thanks to a previous campaign by this Abkhazian animal rights initiative group, the shooting of stray dogs and cats has been banned in Sukhum/i. This cruel practice has been replaced by a more humane process of controlling the number of stray animals through vaccination and sterilization, for which the city administration has set aside the necessary funds. In its next project, the initiative aimed to transfer this good practice from Sukhum/i to other cities in Abkhazia, such as Gudauta and Ochamchira. Through a creative information campaign, the potential for taking a humane approach to the problem of stray animals became known to many local residents, and the long-term efforts of animal rights activists eventually led to local politicians taking up the issue as well. They are now in the process of discussing possible changes to the regulations governing the protection of animal rights.
