Educational Reform under Civic Supervision

Initiative: Kirovohrad branch of the all-Ukrainian "Association for community self-organization assistance"

Location: Kropyvnytskyi, Kirovohrad Oblast

Year: 2018

A group of active women and mothers in the city of Kropyvnytskyi (formerly Kirovohrad), capital of Kirovohrad Oblast, aims to improve the functioning of primary and secondary education there. It is yet another initiative that wants to take advantage of new legislation aimed at school transparency.

There are a number of issues to be solved - the quality of teaching, the school’s economic activities, and extra-budgetary sources of financing – and tackling any of them would enable the expansion and improvement of the schools’ work with children. A partial goal the initiative set for 2018 was the establishment of parents' associations at individual schools through which it would then be possible to communicate about and address individual issues.

The initiative successfully pushed through the establishment of pilot parents' associations at secondary schools in three smaller municipalities in Kirovohrad Oblast: Pomichna, Tyshkivka and Dobrovelychkivka. In the future, the initiative would like to contribute to the establishment of parents' associations in other cities and in Kropyvnytskyi itself.
