Create, Connect & Change

Gavar, the capital of Gegharkunik, Armenia's largest province, is located in a picturesque region surrounded by mountains and lakes. Beyond its natural beauty, Gavar is also a place where family traditions are deeply rooted in society and play a key role in shaping the social identity of its residents.

One of these traditions is arranged engagements between families. Boys and girls are often betrothed in early childhood, and their marriage is organized by their families, regardless of their personal preferences. Another example of traditional values and stereotypes is the restricted freedom of young women and girls. For instance, young women are often not allowed to visit cafes or parks alone, as such behavior can be condemned by both society and their own families.

A way to change these old habits, stereotypes, and restrictions is to encourage an active, cultural, and social life. The local organization Restart Gavar has taken the initiative to contribute to community development by involving local authorities and residents in reconstructing a park that is intended to become the center of public life and a gathering place, especially for youth and parents with young children. The project's goal is to create a space where people can meet, exchange ideas, and participate in various cultural and social activities.

The park's reconstruction includes creating new pathways, installing benches, landscaping, and building playgrounds. The goal is to transform the park into an attractive space for all age groups, providing a safe and pleasant environment for meetings and leisure activities. Restart Gavar also plans to organize cultural events, workshops, and discussions in the park to encourage active participation among residents and challenge traditional gender roles and family customs.
