Initiative: “Centre for Investigative Journalism”
Place: Mykolaiv, Mykolaiv Oblast
Year: 2017
Campaign of investigative journalists and local environmental initiatives responded to the revelation in the city of Mykolaiv. There is an illegal logging industry which is participated by officials and local politicians. For example, the head of the Mykolaiv ecological inspector himself built a large family residence on an illegally logged site. The campaign has set the goal in order to avoid similar affairs. The city council would allow local civil society to participate in environmental management.
As part of the campaign, the coalition “Green Mykolaiv” was formed, with the participation of ten local organizations. These representatives finally managed to legally formulate and enforce a decree that establishes the participation of civil society in the process of cutting down trees on the territory of Mykolaiv as binding rules into Management of the urban planning.
The decree was accepted in January 2018. One of the objectives of the campaign was to reduce the number of logged trees by two-thirds which was succeeded according to official figures (in 2016 there were 1799 logs, while in 2017 only 451).
